For 2015 CPT four new current procedural terminology (CPT®) codes were established by the American Medical Association for the performance of transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block (abdominal plane block, rectus sheath block). The codes delineate unilateral vs. bilateral services as well as single injection vs. continuous infusion. The CPT codes include the performance of imaging guidance and therefore not reported separately.

Tap Blocks

Prior to the July 1, 2015 version of the NCCI (National Correct Coding Initiative) edits, the placement of an arterial line, CPT 36620 when performed with a TAP Block resulted in denial of the TAP block due to a “0” modifier indictor assignment with this code pair edit. Through the efforts of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, both Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and NCCI have deleted the edit.2
