FOR PHARMACIES FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS FOR MANUFACTURERS FOR PAYORS

  • McKesson Backgrounder

McKesson's vision is to help create a health care system where quality is higher, mistakes are fewer, and costs are lower.

Wherever the health care system is working to improve its own health, we are there.

Health care is in our genes. McKesson is America's oldest and largest health care services company, with its pharmaceutical wholesaling roots dating back 175 years. In fact, the company created the first national drug distribution system.

We touch nearly every aspect of the healthcare system:

  • We receive more than 500 million units of medicine and over-the-counter products each year from over 450 manufacturers.

  • We believe we purchase more generic drugs than anyone else in the world.

  • We package 1.5 million life-saving medicines and supplies every night to send to more than 75,000 customer sites.

  • We have more than 600 nurses, and hundreds of doctors and pharmacists working at McKesson.

  • We deliver over $1 billion in medicines to pharmacies, hospitals, physician offices, and other health care sites every week –one-third of the medicines used each day in North America.

  • We distribute more than 150,000 medical-surgical products–ranging from gloves and bandages, to surgical lasers, to flu vaccines–to more than 300,000 physician offices and other customers.

  • We dispense more than half a billion doses of medicine a year, error free, with our hospital pharmacy automation systems.

  • We administer more than 95 million medications annually using bar-coded scanning technology.

  • We prevent more than 330,000 medication errors from harming patients every week.

  • We were the innovator of electronic prescription coupon programs over 10 years ago with the development of the TrialScript program.  The card-based  program motivates and educates patients to initiate and stay on prescription therapy. Since its launch, more than 30 million TrialScript transactions, through the participation of over 55,000 pharmacies and 556,000 physicians, have saved millions of patients a total of more than $400 million annually by providing free or reduced cost access to trial supplies of prescribed medications.

  • We help insurers, including the top 25 managed care organizations, pay claims accurately and faster for over 160 million plan members.

  • We help ensure that appropriate clinical decisions are made by the more than 500,000 nurses–one in five in America–and 200,000 doctors who rely on a McKesson solution to care for patients.

  • We help improve the patient-pharmacist relationship and focus on patient wellness through our Health Mart network of best-in-class, locally-owned pharmacies. Health Mart is the country’s largest and fastest-growing independent pharmacy franchise.

  • As the largest provider of disease management services to state Medicaid agencies, we help patients with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, lung disease, chronic pain and depression live healthier lives.

  • Physicians log onto our physician portal 3.7 million times per month to gain secure access to their patients’ records.

  • We respond to 7.6 million customer service calls annually in our core pharmaceutical distribution business.
  • We process more than 8.5 billion pharmacy transactions annually and maintain connections to more than 90% of the nation’s pharmacies.

  • We process more than 1 billion financial transactions annually, including a broad range of capabilities to ensure that payment sources for services are properly identified prior to care delivery and subsequently settled accurately.

Every day, we make a positive impact on health care.  Across McKesson, we’re working together to make health care transformation a reality by:

  • Using McKesson’s pharmaceutical distribution system, scale and, supply chain excellence to help improve health care. Fully one-third of the medicines used each day in North America are delivered by McKesson, as are many of the supplies. We do this with near perfect accuracy.

  • Becoming a key source of patient safety and error reduction. We do this from the warehouse all the way to the patient bedside.

  • Actively pursuing a role in personal health management for patients. We help patients manage their chronic diseases–such as asthma, diabetes, mental health and heart and lung diseases–through the delivery of   biotech therapies and patient support, including: in-home health monitoring devices, easy remote bill pay, virtual doctor-patient consultations/scheduling, nurse triage, care management and more. Health Mart pharmacists also provide Medication Therapy Management (MTM) services and provide patients with customized health and wellness information that they can use to improve their health conditions.

  • Ensuring healthcare dollars are well spent. Our systems are helping to improve the way healthcare dollars are spent by automating and streamlining manual processes, removing paper, streamlining supply chains and connections between providers and participants, and eliminating rework and avoidable costs.

  • Supporting efficient, productive clinicians.  From efficient, easy-to-use physician portals, to decision support, to imaging tools, mobile nurse stations and automation software for pharmacists–and beyond–we are helping improve the productivity and effectiveness of doctors, nurses, and pharmacists.

  • Facilitating the next generation of health care, in the U.S. and abroad. We are exploring opportunities to selectively take our products and services abroad, participating in global trends including generic drug sourcing, the demand for health care IT, and preventive care. Additionally, we are actively examining the future for groundbreaking next-generation therapies and approaches.

We bottle and deliver the medicines, move the pallets, track the inventory, stock the shelves, dispense the pills, automate the refills, check the dosages, and automate the claims. We guide the diagnosis, monitor the vital signs, counsel the patient, and enable better outcomes.

We help make the infrastructure of the most complex business in the world work better.
