Hospital reduces sepsis mortality rate by 37% and saves 77 lives Peninsula Regional Medical Center, the largest tertiary care facility in the Delmarva region, enlisted McKesson’s Horizon Clinicals® to help caregivers dramatically reduce mortality rates caused by severe sepsis, the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. Since October 2009, the 362-bed hospital has decreased sepsis-related mortalities by 37%. The medical center attributes technology and process change to saving 77 lives and exceeding goals set by the Institute of Healthcare Improvement’s Surviving Sepsis Campaign. In recognition of the achievement, Peninsula Regional has received McKesson’s 2011 Distinguished Achievement Award for Clinical Excellence. The award was presented during a live competition at the Clinical Excellence Award event held on Feb. 9 in Charleston, S.C. The annual awards program recognizes healthcare providers that have used the Horizon Clinicals® solution to drive significant improvements in care quality , patient safety and financial performance. “A severe sepsis infection can cause a patient’s death within 24 hours if not properly treated,” said Chris Snyder, D.O., chief medical informatics officer, Peninsula Regional. “We had a mortality rate in 2008 that was just below the national average, but we knew that we could improve it with earlier detection and treatment. McKesson’s solutions combined with process changes across our organization are enabling us to achieve life-saving improvements in care delivery.” Using McKesson’s electronic care alerts, clinician documentation, emergency care system, computerized physician order entry (CPOE) and other clinical solutions, Peninsula Regional implemented a standard process to expedite orders and reduce care variability upon diagnosis. With immediate access to vital patient information, evidence-based treatment guidelines and tools to automate medication dispensing, the care team delivered more coordinated care and improved efficiency for faster time to treatment. For example, the start time for antibiotic administration has accelerated by 74 minutes, the team has increased its patient monitoring for critical information like lactic acid levels by 65%, and sepsis length of stay has been reduced by three days. In honor of the achievement, Peninsula Regional will receive a $5,000 grant from McKesson to its foundation or charity of choice. The competition was judged by an independent panel of third-party industry experts based on the Institute of Medicine’s Six Aims, which state that care should be safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient and equitable. “Peninsula Regional has demonstrated an ongoing commitment to optimizing the power of healthcare IT,” said Rod O’Reilly, president of Health Systems Enterprise Solutions, McKesson Provider Technologies. “It’s rewarding to see how our solutions empower providers to improve performance and transform how they deliver care. Our mutual goal is better health within their organizations and throughout their communities.” For more information on this year’s award winners, visit the DAA website .
