Resume Writing Tips

Whether you are interested in healthcare sales, finance jobs or another career area, your resume is your first impression, your first step in getting the job you want. Write it well and you will be on your way to building your future healthcare career.

Get started
Step 1:
Think about the job or types of jobs you want to do. Research responsibilities, skills, qualifications and experience required for the job.

Step 2: List your own skills, experiences and qualifications that make you the right match for the job.

Step 3: Summarize your skills, experiences and qualifications in a brief, concise document.

Write it
Most resumes have five or six parts. Understand the format of a resume and what you should think about as you prepare.

Personal information. Basic information on who you are and how to contact you

  • Your name and address
  • Your home, work, and cell phone numbers
  • Your email address if you have one
  • Your geographic preferences (open to relocation or not)

Career objective. Brief description of the job or type of job you want. Use action words when writing your objective statement.

Your qualifications and skills. Brief statement (one to three sentences) that gives the reader a quick impression of you and your overall qualifications for the job.

Current and prior work experience. Outline your work experience, including your most recent position and employer, the name, location (city and state) and the dates you worked for the employer (use whole years), the title of each position you held with employer, dates you held the position and brief bullets describing the job’s responsibilities.

Education and training. List your degree(s), when and where you earned them and any specialization. Include specialized training, such as professional courses relevant to the job.

Professional membership and organizational affiliations. List any professional organizations that might be relevant to the position you want.

Make it great

  • Keep it short and simple. Resumes should be 1-2 pages in length.
  • Keep it active. Use action words to describe what you have done.
  • Emphasize what you've done. Be clear and concise.
  • Keep it neat and well organized. Make sure it is easy to read and laid out well.
  • Use spell checking. Correct spelling and grammar are important.
  • Have a friend review your resume. Ask for feedback.
  • Be honest. Tell the truth about yourself.
  • Don't include salary requirements. You can discuss them at a later stage.
  • Don't include things that don't relate to your professional goals, such as your hobbies.
