* E-Prescribing Awards Program in Progress
In an effort to get doctors to move away from writing paper prescriptions, the new E-Prescribing Incentive Program, part of the new Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA), began January 1, 2009. In order to participate, an E-Prescribing system must be adopted. The bonus program awards doctors who are E-Prescribing with the following structure: For Medicare payments this year and next, physicians get a 2 percent increase, followed by a 1 percent increase in 2011 and 2012. In 2013, the increase drops to 0.5 percent. Both reporting and the awarding of bonuses is via physician’s National Provider Identifier (NPI). After 2013, the program is to be discontinued and penalties will be implemented for those doctors who have not adapted to the new E-Prescribing method. (Source: ASCO)
