Rizk Provides Practical Strategies for Building True Collaboration to Improve Outcomes and Lower Costs

Emad Rizk, MD, president of McKesson Health Solutions, has released his book, entitled “ The New Era of Healthcare: Practical Strategies for Providers and Payers ”. Addressing the need for all healthcare system players to come together to improve efficiency and lower costs like never before, Rizk’s book provides a vision and practical roadmap for ushering in a new “collaborative” era in healthcare. Using examples and case studies, Dr. Rizk demonstrates actionable strategies that can be implemented today to reduce costs, improve broken processes and enhance patient care.

A world renowned healthcare industry expert, Dr. Rizk brings over 25 years of experience working with payors, physicians, hospital systems and pharmaceutical organizations. He provides the healthcare industry, both the commercial and government sectors, with transformational strategies and operational execution expertise through healthcare information technology. In 2008, Dr. Rizk was named one of the “ 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives ” in the U.S. by Modern Physician and one of the nation’s top 25 leaders in disease management by Managed Healthcare Executive. Dr. Rizk serves on boards of numerous healthcare organizations such as the National Quality Review, DMAA: The Care Continuum Alliance, and the International Disease Management Alliance; and is a Senior Scholar Professor at Jefferson Medical College.

“I wrote this book because payors and providers realize that the old ways of doing business are unsustainable. Leaders on both sides of the table are seeing the urgent need to work together toward the mutual goal of improving healthcare efficiency and quality,” said Dr. Rizk. “The term I use for this coming together is “alignment” and this book shows how to develop alignment and apply it in your local community to make an immediate and meaningful difference.”

“As a long-time industry visionary, physician and senior executive at McKesson, Dr. Rizk is singularly qualified to speak to the issues of improving alignment between payors and providers,” said Scott B. Ransom, DO, MBA, MPH, president of University of North Texas Health Science Center. ”Given the current economic state and the changes to come from the new administration, the insights in this book are more valuable than ever for the healthcare industry.”

Dr. Rizk’s book presents several strategies for payors and providers working toward better patient care and more equitable compensation, such as:

  • Establishment and funding of technology including portals and electronic health records to enhance information sharing
  • Ideas for incentive-based payment programs that engage rather than penalize physicians
  • Tips for streamlining, enhancing and better aligning clinical, administrative and financial processes and goals

With this new level of innovative alignment, providers can improve care for their patients, decrease time spent on administrative chores and be paid for providing quality care; while payors will benefit from lower costs, better results, and an improved ability to track and assist in a patient’s care.

“This piece is much more than my brain-child as it draws upon the wisdom of countless payor and hospital executives, physicians, nurses and patients, with whom I have had the honor of interacting with over the years,” said Dr. Rizk. “I see the book as a tool to be kept and re-read by those in this industry committed to influencing the changes that will improve the healthcare landscape for everyone.”
