Health Alliance and Security Health Plan to Use Clear Coverage™ for Point of Care Decisions

McKesson today announced that Health Alliance Medical Plans and Security Health Plan have joined a growing number of health plans that have licensed Clear Coverage ™ with  InterQual ® Criteria to enable point-of-care decision support and automated authorization.

Efforts to control medical spend through preauthorization can be effective in reducing unnecessary services, but often carry their own burdens. McKesson analysis showed that more than 90 percent of preauthorizations require a phone call or faxed request. This decentralized process is slow and labor intensive, and can require an average turnaround time of 36 to 48 hours for routine authorization requests.

Clear Coverage links payors and providers by enabling real-time, electronic authorization and coverage determination, including fully automated medical necessity reviews. InterQual leads the industry in evidence-based clinical decision support for healthcare utilization management with over 4,000 hospital, health plan and government agency clients. The combined solution drives down administrative costs, increases consistency in evidence-based clinical decision-making and improves payor-provider relations.

“Like most health plans, we are looking for innovative ways to cut administrative costs,” said Robert Parker, MD, CMO, Health Alliance. “We expect Clear Coverage with InterQual Criteria to deliver significant returns by automating utilization management processes, while lessening the burden to our providers and providing evidence-based decision support at the point of care.”

“With Clear Coverage, we are combining our 30 plus years of decision support expertise with innovative Web services technology to help our health plan customers lower costs and improve provider relations,” said Tammie Phillips, vice president of InterQual at McKesson.

Clear Coverage automates medical necessity reviews to support real-time medical service decisions at the point of care and within the health plan organization. Clear Coverage, a McKesson Advanced Diagnostics Management solution, combines evidence-based criteria from a trusted source with advanced technology that connects payors, labs and providers to streamline the coverage determination and authorization process.
