BROOMFIELD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--McKesson Health Solutions, a business unit of McKesson Corporation, today announced that its enhanced primary care case management and disease management program for Pennsylvania’s Medicaid program, ACCESS Plus, generated $35.9 million of net savings. Mercer Government Human Services Consulting audited the results, which quantifies the success of the program’s second year (July 1, 2006–June 30, 2007). “Through better self-management of their chronic illnesses, Pennsylvania’s high-cost, high-risk Medicaid beneficiaries not only improved their health but also helped the state reduce related healthcare costs,” said Emad Rizk, M.D., president of McKesson Health Solutions. McKesson has provided disease management services to the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare since March 2005. The program, called ACCESS Plus, uniquely integrates an enhanced primary care practitioner network with disease management. The program serves approximately 290,000 Medicaid beneficiaries in the Commonwealth’s 42 rural counties. McKesson nurses and other healthcare professionals provide education and support to help Pennsylvania Medicaid beneficiaries better manage asthma, diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), coronary artery disease (CAD) and heart failure. In addition to the $35.9 million program net savings – the savings over and above program costs – the Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard Kennedy School recently named ACCESS Plus as one of 15 finalists for the 2008 Innovations in American Government Awards.
