Leaders in Industry and Policy Frame Challenges and Solutions for Enabling Personalized Medicine Through Health Information Technology

McKesson Health Solutions President Emad Rizk, MD will speak at the Enabling Personalized Medicine Through Health Information Technology seminar on Friday, January 28, 2011 at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C . The Center for Technology Innovation at Brookings will host top executives and policy experts as they discuss how technology can bring together scientific, policy and operational changes to speed adoption of this promising new approach in healthcare.

Personalized medicine uses genetic information to pinpoint the right diagnosis and best treatment for each individual. Used appropriately, molecular medicine, or “precision medicine,” can have a significant impact on reducing the total cost of care while improving outcomes. In light of reform initiatives and the changing healthcare landscape, it is critical for industry leaders to share their experiences and expertise. The seminar will highlight what can be done to ensure that policy and IT systems support the sharing and analysis of genetic and outcomes data to help fully realize the potential of such targeted diagnosis and treatment.

“McKesson is strongly committed to advancing personalized medicine with its promise for faster, better diagnosis and therapies that are targeted more precisely for each patient’s needs – improving both quality and cost,” said Rizk. “Our early innovation and experience in creating solutions for advanced diagnostics using evidence-based criteria has given us insight into how the healthcare industry can further the application of this science in clinical settings in a timely and effective way. It’s clear that a path to an integrated healthcare IT infrastructure is needed, with clear, simple point of care decision support. This will need to be a joint effort between government and commercial entities to ensure that appropriate public policy and innovation can be enabled.”

Dr. Rizk will be one of several influential healthcare executives and policy experts on the Brookings panel discussing IT challenges and solutions for personalized medicine. A world-renowned healthcare industry expert, Rizk serves on multiple non-profit and academic boards, and has an extensive roster of published works and speaking engagements. In 2010, he was named one of the 50 Most Powerful Physician Executives by Modern Physician for the third time in a row, and one of the Top 100 Most Powerful People in Healthcare by Modern Healthcare for the second consecutive year.
