New Version of McKesson's Care Management Software Makes Care Coordination in Field Easier, More Effective
August 02, 2007

NEWTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--McKesson Corporation, the world’s leading healthcare services company, has released version 4.0 of CareEnhance Clinical Management Software (CCMS®), a flexible, member-centric suite of care management workflow solutions that helps payors provide efficient and effective case, utilization and disease management programs. Along with improved usability and system integration, CCMS 4.0 expands remote care coordination capabilities for health plan nurses working in the field on laptops or tablet PCs.

While the majority of health plan care managers work telephonically, many also work directly in hospitals, provider offices, health fairs and patient homes, an approach that leads to more successful care coordination and program enrollment and adherence. “CCMS remote capabilities can improve efficiency and effectiveness because nurses have current member information and workflow support tools wherever they need to be,” said Brenda Sims, vice president of product management for the McKesson Health Solutions business unit.

Because no network connection is needed, the CCMS Care Manager module allows nurses to perform all care coordination activities anywhere with reliability. The software’s remote feature enables access to patient data and the full range of Care Manager desktop functionality as well as InterQual® Criteria, the gold standard in evidence-based clinical decision support. “Poor connectivity or lack of wireless connections makes it challenging for care managers working in the field to secure and maintain contact with their organization’s network,” said Sims. “CCMS eliminates this issue.

Added to the efficiencies of an automated care management system, the ability of CCMS to work totally disconnected from a server can extend the reach of a health plan’s care management programs. For example, CCMS could help drive enrollment in disease management programs by enabling nurses to engage members on the spot at health fairs when they are thinking about their health and more open to education.

Improved remote database build flexibility and automation of “checking out” members from the CCMS database laptops are some enhancements to the latest CareEnhance Care Manager. Plans can build databases that are completely populated with member data or that only contain the members to which the user is assigned. This allows a disease manager to bring the entire population to that health fair, and a care manager to take only her assigned cases to the local hospital for discharge planning. While selected records are “checked out” by remote users, other authorized users can continue to add to them. The system automatically synchronizes data once the nurse in the field connects to the core CCMS system, enabling everyone on the care management team to work from the most complete, up-to-date records.

Also, the newly enhanced version of CCMS features better data recoverability so no data is lost if the synchronization process is interrupted.

CCMS is the most comprehensive, flexible and scalable member-centric care management solution on the market. CCMS helps payors decide where to focus their resources, better coordinate care through workflow automation and effective communication, integrate data at key points in the workflow, and base their interventions on evidence-based standards of care.
