Market Embraces Next-Generation Software System’s Ability to Address Pharmacy Issues

McKesson Pharmacy Systems (MPS), a software division of McKesson Corporation, announced today at the 2009 National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) Pharmacy Technology Show that it has installed EnterpriseRx™ in almost 1,500 chain, outpatient and independent pharmacies across the nation, nearly tripling the number of live sites since August 2008.

“Today more than 75 clients, representing more than 4000 sites, have selected EnterpriseRx as their pharmacy system of choice,” said Brenton Burns, senior vice president of strategy, product management and marketing, McKesson Pharmacy Systems. “We attribute this rapid rate of adoption to McKesson’s continued investment and development of the software system since our acquisition in 2007.”

Designed by pharmacists with real-world experience, EnterpriseRx provides users with more control over the entire prescription filling process and provides a solution for common administration and management responsibilities. EnterpriseRx is also designed to help avoid many data consistency issues by using a Software as a Service (SaaS) platform that centralizes databases. With SaaS authorized users can access real-time information from any location to better manage pharmacy workload, reporting and inventory throughout their pharmacy operations.

“We use the system across all of our pharmacies and it affords us real-time access to our data, and we’ve successfully adopted the workflow functionality of EnterpriseRx,” said Jim Cousineau vice president pharmacy operations, Brookshire Grocery Co. “As early adopters of EnterpriseRx, our pharmacies are equipped to compete in tomorrow’s pharmacy industry.”

With improving patient safety a key goal, the EnterpriseRx pharmacy workflow is designed to allocate activities into queues based on the roles of the pharmacist and technician, and includes built-in accuracy scans, real-time alerts, and defined user permissions to prevent prescriptions from being handled by unauthorized personnel.

“The competitive market is forcing pharmacies to improve their operations to maintain profitability,” said Tim Kosty, R.Ph. and president of Pharmacy Healthcare Solutions, Inc. “Pharmacies that have installed integrated workflow systems have improved operational efficiencies while providing the highest level of patient safety.”

For MPS the popularity of EnterpriseRx reinforces the company’s dedication to its mission of helping customers deliver high-quality healthcare.

“The consistent adoption of EnterpriseRx demonstrates our ability to address known pharmacy operational challenges such as medication errors, workflow inefficiencies and data discrepancies,” said Burns. “The benefit is pharmacists are reclaiming their position out in front of the counter with the patient to provide excellent customer care and medication counseling.”
