Baptist Healthcare System, Louisville, Ky.—Baptist Healthcare System used healthcare IT to build a culture of transparency, achieving remarkable improvements in patient care, clinical efficiency and financial performance. At its five hospitals, Baptist Healthcare has built an extensive McKesson IT infrastructure that collects and processes a large amount of clinical and financial data. To reinforce a team approach and improve patient care, Baptist Healthcare developed a process to quickly turn that data into reports that help care teams identify problem areas and improve processes. Since beginning the initiative, the health system has seen its Appropriate Care Measure scores increase by an average of 87 percent, with its pneumonia score dramatically tripling from 29 percent to 89 percent. In addition, all five Baptist hospitals now fully meet regulatory quality-of-care reporting standards, which represents more than $40 million for the organization.

Bloomington Hospital, Bloomington, Ind.—Bloomington Hospital transformed its paper-based system with disparate technologies into a truly integrated, patient-centric delivery model. The health system has also significantly improved safety, coordination of care and access to information across its continuum of hospitals and outpatient facilities. Diagnosis and treatment is much more efficient, thanks to rapid access to patient information — for example, in the radiology department, report turnaround times dropped from two days to less than four hours. In addition, medication errors have decreased by 75 percent overall, including: A 98 percent reduction in omitted doses; a 48 percent reduction in wrong doses; and a 67 percent reduction in wrong drug.

Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, Wheaton, Ill.—In nine hospitals and more than 30 physician offices across two states, Wheaton Franciscan partnered with McKesson to implement a wide range of IT systems including an electronic health record (EHR). The organization has not only connected and standardized care, but also improved productivity and quality, enhanced revenue and reduced costs. Through healthcare IT and process change, the health system has exceeded the 90th percentile for adverse drug event prevention, improved physician chart deficiencies by more than 40 percent, and at one site, decreased record storage costs by 94 percent. Over five years, financial benefits are expected to total more than $70 million.

OhioHealth, Columbus, Ohio—To help ensure greater safety in its medication and laboratory processes, OhioHealth implemented a broad range of McKesson’s clinical solutions. It also fostered a culture that encourages the delivery of the highest-quality care in a timely and efficient manner.  The health system has reduced medication errors by 92 percent overall, decreased the incidence of mislabeled blood specimens by 98 percent, and cut patient identification errors by 20 percent. In addition to improving safety, OhioHealth has saved more than $400,000.

Affinity Health System, Menasha, Wis.—Tobacco use affects more than 46 million Americans and is the most preventable cause of premature death in the United States. Alarmed by high usage rates among adults and teens in its community, Affinity Health System sought to help tobacco users quit. The health system used McKesson’s RelayHealth call center solution to support its Call it Quits program. Since beginning the program, Affinity Health System has exceeded the national average for tobacco quit rate while achieving high patient satisfaction—and from 1997-2007, Wisconsin has seen a five percent and 16 percent reduction in adult and teen tobacco usage, respectively.
