McKesson reaches milestone of distributing 100 million COVID-19 vaccine doses

April 2, 2021

McKesson is honored to play a pivotal role in supporting the U.S. government’s efforts to overcome one of the world’s most significant healthcare challenges, the COVID-19 pandemic. Today, an important milestone in that effort was reached – McKesson has distributed 100 million doses, combined, of the Moderna vaccine and the COVID-19 vaccine received from Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc., one of the Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson.

Selected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Aug. 14, 2020 as the centralized distributor, McKesson began distributing the first doses of Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine in December 2020 and the first doses of Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine in March. The centralized model is a key factor in enabling McKesson, in partnership with the CDC, to distribute an enormous amount of vaccines in such a short period of time and with nearly perfect accuracy.

As part of the centralized distribution model, McKesson set up four dedicated COVID-19 vaccine distribution centers with large, custom freezers and refrigerators to safely store and process millions of vaccine doses. The facilities can scale to meet the demand of increasing volumes of vaccines being manufactured.

“We appreciate the trust the U.S. government and vaccine manufacturers like Moderna and Johnson & Johnson have put in McKesson to support the distribution of COVID-19 vaccines and supporting ancillary supply kits,” said Shawn Seamans, president, RxCrossroads and executive lead of McKesson’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution. “This noteworthy milestone is a tribute to all involved – including the extraordinary McKesson team members and partners who have worked tirelessly to help us prepare for and be able to reach such a monumental threshold.”

Among the many partners that made this and future milestones possible include:

  • ADT Security
  • ABET Alliance
  • Blankenship Change Consulting
  • Cielo Talent Services
  • Cold Chain Technologies
  • Elite Staffing
  • FedEx
  • Honeywell
  • inSync Staffing

Expanded Ancillary Supply Kits for Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccines

Jan. 19, 2021

For the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, McKesson is now creating mega supply kits to support 1,170 doses – enough for six doses per vial. The ancillary supply kits are shipped separately from the vaccine.

Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution Delay

Jan. 18, 2021

McKesson learned on Monday, Jan. 18, that certain deliveries of Moderna vaccines shipped on Sunday, Jan. 17, arrived at the sites of administration colder than the low end of the manufacturer’s stated temperature range. McKesson is replacing these vaccines. We also identified the root cause of the issue – some of the gel packs used to maintain appropriate temperatures during shipping were found to be conditioned too cold – and have taken steps to prevent this from occurring in the future.

McKesson also proactively reviewed doses that were slated for shipment on Monday, Jan. 18, and determined that a small percentage of those shipments were also impacted by the gel pack temperature issue. McKesson did not ship those doses and is replacing them within the next 24 hours. McKesson worked directly with the CDC to notify each state awardee that was expecting a shipment about the delay.

McKesson is honored to play a pivotal role in this initiative of unprecedented scale. In this complex distribution program, our goal is that every shipment be received at the administration sites in a timely manner and within the temperature guidelines established by the manufacturer.
