The goal of USP General Chapter <800> is to ensure that clinicians safely handle hazardous drugs and are protected from drug exposure.

  • Clinicians need to have chemo-rated protective equipment, appropriate spill and clean-up items and closed transfer devices to draw the hazardous drug out of its vial and administer it to the patient.
  • Those who admix sterile hazardous drugs will be required to adhere to specific room and hood requirements
  • Hazardous drug preparations should be clearly labeled and packaged separately in case of breakage and spills

Anyone who handles these drugs needs to be in compliance by December 2019.

Julie Cothren is a Clinical Specialist as part of the Advisory Services team for McKesson Pharmaceutical Solutions and Services. She began her career as a retail pharmacist and followed that with several years as the Director of Pharmacy Operations for a large cancer center. In her current role with McKesson, she works to support clinics and healthcare systems with educational support and regulatory guidance and preparation.
