Capital Oncology & Hematology Associates and Hematology-Oncology Consultants, P.A. join Maryland Oncology Hematology, P.A.
Columbia, Md. (June 20, 2011) - Capital Oncology & Hematology Associates (COHA) and Hematology-Oncology Consultants, P.A. (HOC) announced today that they are joining Maryland Oncology Hematology, P.A. (MOH), an affiliate of the United Network of US Oncology. United as Maryland Oncology Hematology, the three practices will provide patients with increased access to integrated, evidence-based cancer care and clinical research throughout Maryland's Howard, Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties as well as the surrounding D.C. area.
"The addition of more physicians to the practice brings more collaboration of expertise," said Jon K. Minford, MD, practice president, MOH. "This is an exciting endeavor, and we at Maryland Oncology Hematology are looking forward to working together to advance cancer care."
Through the union of the three practices and as part of the US Oncology Research network, MOH will provide patients with an increased opportunity to participate in innovative clinical trials and access to the latest treatment options without having to travel miles away from home. US Oncology Research network physicians have played a pivotal role in the development of 43 cancer-fighting therapies approved by the FDA and helped more than 48,000 patients participate in clinical trials.
"This partnership will allow our highly-respected and passionate physicians to reach so many more patients," says Linda Faggio, practice administrator, Maryland Oncology Hematology. "The doctors and staff from each practice enhance the care we bring to patients exponentially. Their passion and experience enable us to provide top-notch care to all patients battling cancer. In addition, we are expanding from one site of care to four locations and from five doctors to 12 board-certified physicians. We are a fast-growing network of oncologists, and this allows us to bring high-quality, evidence-based cancer care and cutting edge clinical trials to more patients in their own communities close to home and close to their families."
"Joining Maryland Oncology Hematology is giving us the ability to impact more patients' lives," said Kashif Firozvi, M.D., medical oncologist and hematologist, COHA. "We will now be able to harness the shared expertise of a national network of physicians to advance cancer care as well as be able to offer our patients clinical trials in the community setting. This merger will take the cancer care and patient experience we provide to the next level."
As a member of the United Network of US Oncology, the physicians of Maryland Hematology Oncology will be able to collaborate with more than 1,100 oncologists and leading researchers from around the country to offer improved therapeutic drug management programs, cutting-edge clinical trials and an established evidence-based medicine approach to delivering patient care.
"Our first priority is to our patients, and I am excited about this opportunity and the benefits it will bring to our patients and the communities we serve," said Martin Weltz, M.D., medical oncologist, hematologist and vice president, HOC. "The three practices share a common vision with McKesson Specialty Care Solutions | US Oncology to advance cancer care through the use of evidence-based medicine and clinical research available to patients in the community setting. This partnership will improve patient access and affordability to that care."
