Pharmacists are the healthcare’s industry consummate role player. Traditionally, they have a singular task to perform in the patient care equation, and that’s filling prescriptions. But that limited role is often self-imposed. The reality is, pharmacists can play a much wider and more important role in the delivery of patient care by practicing at the top of their license, which gives them the authority to be directly involved in patient care that requires prescription medication.
The opportunity for pharmacists to expand and transform their scope of practice and pharmacy operations is limitless, according to McKesson’s Mark Eastham, senior vice president and general manager of McKesson Pharmacy Optimization. In fact, pharmacist are in the best position to improve patient engagement with their treatment plans because typically they are the caregiver that spends the most face time with patients, he says.
