Twelve health care sectors. Sixty-nine health care organizations. One hundred and eight senior health care leaders. One mind: Re-imagine the delivery of health care services in Ontario, Canada.
That was the goal of Better Health Toronto, the fourth stop on McKesson’s Better Health Tour and the first in Canada. The one-day event, held Oct. 30, 2014, in Toronto and hosted by McKesson Canada, asked participants to respond to one challenge: What can health care leaders in Ontario do to dramatically improve the quality, reduce the cost and transform the experience of care at the regional and community level?
Provincial health care leaders and local health care entrepreneurs led a series of presentations, interactive exercises and small group discussions that guided the participants to answers. Among these leaders were: Eric Hoskins, M.D., Ontario Minister of Health and Long-Term Care; Anne Snowden, professor and chair of the International Centre for Health Innovation at the Richard Ivey School of Business; Jaime Watt, executive chairman of Navigator; and Nik Nanos, president and CEO of Nanos Research.
The participants reached a consensus on three steps they believe are necessary to move Ontario in the right direction:
Fostering an environment to implement innovation will be necessary to deliver a sustainable health care system.- There is a responsibility to promote and share innovative practices, approaches and technology as a means to driving wider adoption and the ongoing evolution of the system.
- Close collaboration between the public and private sectors is the answer to the tough challenges facing health systems across the country.
“It can’t be just incremental changes in how health care is provided and accessed,” says Alain Champagne, president of McKesson Canada. “Instead, we have to re-imagine current approaches to create a future where value, connectivity, insight and accessibility are paramount and ingrained in all of the touch points of our health care system.”
