For one day in June, nearly 150 people representing a cross section of the Minneapolis-St. Paul healthcare market took a break from their daily routines to come together and talk about the disruptive innovations exploding in healthcare that will make their days anything but routine in the future.
The event, Better Health Twin Cities, was held June 11 at the Hyatt Regency Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis. Sponsored by McKesson, the one-day conference brought together six local “Edisons,” or innovators, whose new ideas and approaches to healthcare financing and delivery are dramatically changing the market for both patients and healthcare businesses for the better. In addition to mixing with one another, the six Edisons mixed with the other participants through a series of facilitated large group discussions and wide-open small group presentations.
Among the lessons learned by the attendees of Better Health Twin Cities were:
- The difference between sustaining innovation and disruptive innovation
- The co-dependent relationship between small companies, Davids, and large companies, Goliaths, when it comes to transforming healthcare
- The role of collaboration and transparency in moving innovation forward
- The need to formally invest in and structure a process for innovation
- The passion, drive and attitude needed by entrepreneurs to successfully innovate in healthcare
Better Health Twin Cities was the third stop on the Better Health Tour sponsored by McKesson. The first stop was Portland on March 5, and the second, March 26, in Boston. The next stop is scheduled for October 30 in Toronto.

The Better Health Tour
Like politics, all healthcare is local. But what can local businesses do to transform their organizations and the community in an ecosystem as complex as healthcare? The Better Health Tour is an opportunity for local healthcare leaders to engage in candid and meaningful conversations about the future of healthcare in select cities. The conferences in Portland, Boston and the Twin Cities enable an exchange of ideas between local leaders across organizational barriers, industry segments, traditional interests and points of view. The aim is to help broaden perspectives, to challenge and redefine priorities, and to catalyze the development of innovative approaches that will strengthen the local healthcare ecosystem.
That’s why McKesson is presenting the Better Health Tour. It’s not a marketing event or a trade show. We believe that the challenges of healthcare will only be solved by generating practical ideas, innovative approaches and new growth in the healthcare industry at the local level. The events have been designed to identify opportunities that will enable transformative innovation and provide participants with a new framework for thinking about the practical solutions that will lead to better health for both their own organizations and the community.
