The “PPT framework” – referring to the strategic balance and development of people, processes, and technology – is well known throughout organizations and industries, more broadly, for its ability to trigger and support sweeping transformations anchored in efficiency, innovation, and success. Also notable of the PPT framework is its versatility – meaning it can be applied in almost any industry – from culinary to finance to education and beyond. In the health system pharmacy specifically, the PPT model certainly can be (and has been) a critical tool in meeting modern challenges like ongoing labor and resource constraints and regulatory shifts, to name a few – and one that will likely continue to be referenced both in the near and distant futures alike.

But this American Pharmacists Month, we are celebrating a different framework – one that has simultaneously served as a scaffolding for growth and a source of core truth for health system pharmacists since the profession has been acknowledged as such, which is thought by some to have occurred as part of a more significant movement in the 1920s, while others argue that earlier milestones say otherwise – like hospital leaders seeking out dedicated pharmacy experts during the Civil War, for one. In either case, we are taking the opportunity this October to recognize what we call the “PPP framework” – or the “3 P’s” of health system pharmacy: people, patients, and partnership.

Everyday heroes. Extraordinary impact.

The work of health system pharmacists rarely makes headlines, but what they do each day has a direct impact on clinical outcomes, financial performance, and the overall success of the organization. They are helping ensure the safest, most effective therapies reach patients. They are helping balance clinical priorities with business considerations to safeguard both outcomes and sustainability.

And their voices are increasingly shaping how hospitals and health systems operate at a higher level, with more pharmacists now having a seat at the C-suite table than ever before.

This unique blend of expertise and acumen in multiple areas continues to inform strategy and inspire the innovations necessary for long-term viability – so these institutions can provide the reliable, accessible, quality care their communities deserve.

What – and who – it’s all about

Amid the complexity of contracts, supply chains, and constantly changing regulatory and compliance guidelines health system pharmacists deal with on a daily basis, one constant remains: the patient. Every process, every policy, and every innovation achieved or problem solved in the health system pharmacy is ultimately about improving the care experience and outcome of a patient in need. Whether that means helping to ensure the right drug is available at the right time, working to secure financial assistance for life-changing therapies, or advocating for broader initiatives that could expand critical drug access, patients are the reason behind virtually every effort and decision made by dedicated health system pharmacists.

Progress built together

For all that the pharmacist does for the advancement of patient care and for the good of the profession and industry as a whole, the success of the health system pharmacy – by every measure of the word – has always relied on collaboration, whether that be across clinical teams, administrative leadership, suppliers, industry partners, or elsewhere. It’s in these partnerships that true progress – the kind that makes a meaningful impact, be it at scale or to a sole patient or family – takes shape.

At McKesson, we are proud to help health systems achieve more through strategic partnerships that are built upon a shared vision for what’s possible. Our health system pharmacy experts and industry-leading voices – many of them pharmacists themselves – work directly alongside our customers to translate that shared vision into impact.

A time to shine

The day-to-day work of the health system pharmacist may be behind the scenes for the most part, but the difference these healthcare professionals make is always in the spotlight. This American Pharmacists Month (and all year long), join us in recognizing health system pharmacists and celebrating the foundation of the health system pharmacy – people, patients, and partnership – that have helped define the profession’s past and will unequivocally set the stage for success now and into the future.
