Specialty pharmacy has become one of the most consequential areas of focus for health systems, shaped by expanding therapy pipelines, evolving access considerations, and growing expectations to deliver strong clinical and financial performance.
That is why our specialty pharmacy experts will be at the HOSP 2026 Annual Meeting, October 20–21 in Washington, D.C., joining a community of leaders dedicated to advancing specialty pharmacy. The meeting offers a valuable setting to exchange perspectives with peers, examine the operational and strategic questions leaders are working through, and better understand the priorities defining this service line today.
Conversations like these sharpen our view of what specialty pharmacy leaders are facing and where they are choosing to invest. As specialty continues to shape both patient outcomes and organizational performance, that understanding informs how we help health systems achieve more for the business of pharmacy.
As a pharmacist, my priority was always getting my patients the treatment they needed. But once the prescription was transferred, I faced a visibility gap into whether the medication was filled, how quickly treatment started, or the patient’s progress throughout their care journey.
Few challenges illustrate that better than what happens when a specialty prescription leaves the health system. In her latest Prescribed Perspectives article, Brittany Ulrich, PharmD, CSP, BCBBS, examines how limited distribution drugs and payer network requirements push prescriptions outside the organization—and the visibility gaps that follow across care coordination, patient outcomes, and decision-making.
