Fitch Ratings said in its 2023 outlook that labor expenses will remain the biggest challenge facing U.S. health systems.1 In the report, Fitch has the sector outlook for 2023 as “deteriorating,” building on its outlook from 2022.

Health systems are facing intense expense pressure as the typical labor budget of 50% edges toward 75%, compounded by inflationary pressures. The sector is seeing compressing margins for virtually all providers.
