GLENDALE, Ariz. (Feb. 8, 2013) -Arizona Oncology, united in healing with The US Oncology Network, has expanded its patient services by adding a new radiation center and a third radiation oncologist to its suite of cancer care services. The new Arizona Oncology Radiation Oncology and Imaging Center, located next to Arrowhead Hospital in Glendale, will be led by Dr. Irene Taw, a highly experienced radiation oncologist with 14 years of experience in the Phoenix area. Dr. Taw is currently seeing patients at the new center, which offers state-of-the-art radiation therapy services.
"Dr. Taw has a reputation as an excellent physician," said fellow Arizona Oncology radiation oncologist Dr. Kenneth Luk. "She is very personable and kind to her patients. We've known her as a valuable colleague and are thrilled that she has joined our medical team."
The new Arizona Oncology Radiation Oncology and Imaging Center will be a great asset to Arrowhead Hospital and Glendale area patients. It will offer a full complement of treatment options, such as intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). Patients will also have access to positron emission computed tomography (PET/CT SCAN).
"It's very exciting," said Dr. Taw. "The PET/CT is a great additional diagnostic tool that allows us to spare as much normal tissue as possible during radiation treatment planning."
In addition, the new radiation center will offer breast cancer patients a form of radiation therapy called brachytherapy (APBI -Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation), which requires only five days of treatment. "It is a very well tolerated form of treatment for select women with breast cancer and far less disruptive to patients' lives," she said.
The center will have a full complement of technical staffing, including three full-time radiation therapists, a medical dosimetrist, and a medical physicist. A medical physicist helps plan the patient's radiation treatment using highly accurate radiation beams or internal radioactive sources and is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and safety of the treatment process along with the optimal operation of the center's technological equipment.
Dr. Taw received her doctor of medicine degree at the Finch University of Health Science in North Chicago, her bachelor of science in biochemistry at the University of California-Davis and recently completed a master of business administration degree at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
The Arizona Oncology Radiation Oncology and Imaging Center is located at 6525 W. Sack Drive, Suite 105, in Glendale. The center will operate from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and may be reached by phone at 623-888-5400.
Arizona Oncology also offers radiation oncology services at the Biltmore Cancer Center, 2222 E. Highland Ave., Suite 130 and at Phoenix Baptist Hospital, 1916 W. Bethany Home Road, Suite 100, where Drs. Jerry Lucas and Kenneth Luk are currently seeing patients. In addition, radiation oncology services through Arizona Oncology are available to patients in Tucson.
