Cancer Centers of North Carolina Engage Physicians in Discussion and Presentation to Improve the Quality of Care for Local Patients with Cancer
Raleigh, N.C. (Aug. 22, 2011) – Cancer Centers of North Carolina (CCNC), an affiliate of The US Oncology Network and a 19physician practice dedicated to communitybased cancer care since 1979, invites triangle area primary care providers including internists, family practitioners, hospitalists, and other healthcare providers to an interactive update and review of topics in Hematology and Oncology. The meeting will take place from 8:30 am to Noon, Saturday, Aug. 27, at Raleigh Crabtree Valley Marriott, 4500 Marriott Drive. Seating is limited. RSVP to 919-510-5666 or ncccncrsvp@usoncology.com.
"Patients receive the best care when their entire healthcare team works together," said Alan Kritz, M.D., medical oncologist and president of CCNC. "This comprehensive meeting addresses the practical application of therapeutic strategies in hematology and oncology to improve the overall care for patients with cancer. It's a great opportunity for local Raleigh physicians to network and collaborate on the care of their patients."
The day will include the latest news, updates and discussions presented by CCNC expert oncologists on a variety of topics including: Leukemia, alternatives to Coumadin, perioperative anticoagulation, hypercoagulation work-up, use of erythropoietin in anemia management, the role of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) in head and neck cancers, and advancements in radiation therapy. Oncologists will lead discussions and provide updates on cancers of the breast (including subtypes), cervix, colon, head and neck, liver, lung and ovaries, as well as better decision-making for newly diagnosed prostate cancer patients and primary care management of cervical cancer.
The day concludes with a round-table case based discussion on screening, detection and management of hereditary cancer syndromes in the community setting. Raleigh resident and breast cancer survivor Debbie Horwitz will also participate in the discussion. After losing her mother to breast cancer at an early age, Ms. Horwitz discovered her own lump, learned she was BRCA positive, received a radical double mastectomy and finally opted for breast reconstruction. She is the inspiration behind Myself: Together Again (www.myselftogetheragain.org), a story of delayed breast reconstruction.
CCNC physician presenters include: Neeraj Agrawal, M.D.; William Berry, M.D.; Elizabeth Campbell, M.D.; Roy Cromartie, M.D.; Margaret Deutsch, M.D.; Charles Eisenbeis, M.D., Ph.D.; Maha Elkordy, M.D.; Monica Jones, M.D.; Andrew S.
