The McKesson Institute for Community & Health, an approved provider of certification and continuing education, was created to improve and expand healthcare access. In 2022, we introduced the Community Health Worker (CHW) discipline and now offer certified training and ongoing education for CHWs, supporting their crucial role in our communities.

What are Community Health Workers?

CHWs are trusted members of the communities they serve, often acting as liaisons between healthcare providers and the community. They help to increase health knowledge through activities such as outreach, community education, informal counseling, social support and advocacy.

Course Description

The CHW certification course focuses on health access and clinical integration. It uses a blended learning approach, combining live virtual group sessions with self-paced, on-demand individual lessons. This online training format offers participants greater flexibility. The self-paced modules ensure consistency and repetition of content, allowing learners to review the material as many times as needed and progress at their own speed.

Schedule & Course Expectations

  • Weekly live sessions in Microsoft Teams for up to 20 weeks (typically 10), 160 hours
  • On-demand self-paced modules are completed in the Cornerstone online platform
  • Learners will complete group activities, demonstrations, role-playing and case studies over the course of 10 weeks
  • The CHW course is graded as a “Pass” or “Fail” course. Students that complete 80% of the coursework satisfactorily
