McKesson employees are driven by a simple purpose: improve people’s lives. From a day-to-day standpoint, that work is centered around creating healthier communities through better access to care. But this mission to help others doesn’t stop at serving McKesson’s customers – it involves continually finding ways to support the communities where McKesson employees work and live.
This holiday season, McKesson is extending its long history of generosity by participating in the GivingTuesday movement. The global event, which takes place each year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, was created eight years ago to inspire people and organizations to do good in their communities.
In a year with no shortage of health and financial hardship, this need to give back has never been more prominent. It’s why the McKesson Foundation is not only joining the effort for the first time, but also tripling the impact of its employees’ donations by doubling the match. For every $1 McKesson employees give to a participating nonprofit or charity this year, the Foundation will match $2.
And while the company might be new to GivingTuesday this year, its matching gifts program has a long history of fostering employees’ community giving year-round.
“Generosity is built into our company’s DNA,” says Margaret Buckley, manager, the McKesson Foundation. “Through natural disasters and public health crises, our employees are the anchors that tie us to our communities and keep us striving to make them the best they can be.”
Colleen Conway, director, RelayHealth Hub, discovered the matching gifts program through the Foundation’s volunteer grant program, which rewards employees for their volunteer time by giving their organization of choice a financial grant. She’s actively involved with Noah's Clubhouse, a charity that helps children with cerebral palsy by helping fund therapy services that can make a big difference in their lives. She also volunteers with Future Possibilities for Kids, a Toronto-based coaching and mentoring program for children in underserved communities.
“So many nonprofits are suffering this year as a result of the pandemic, so giving back to these great causes is especially important right now,” she says.
“Generosity is built into our company’s DNA.”
Jon Ganues, a quality assurance analyst, supports several nonprofit organizations in the Richmond, Va. area. From serving on the Henrico County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) board to volunteering with the Feed More food bank, Ganues says McKesson’s matching program has helped him be a better neighbor to those in need throughout his community.
"McKesson's generosity empowers me to do more,” he says. “It inspires me to double my impact by helping others not just in my own backyard, but all across the country.”
While McKesson already matches its employees’ contributions year-round, Ganues says the fact that the company is going a step further this holiday season speaks to McKesson’s commitment to living out its values.
“This generosity truly exemplifies who we are as a purpose-driven company.”
